GHOSTS, ACTIVITY AND THE UNKNOWN
Different types of activity that you may be encountering if your property is haunted are listed here to help understand what is occurring.
Many of the things listed have been encountered by the team both during and away from investigations.
Remember paranormal activity can occur anywhere, not just in a building.
Various smells and fragrances are often encountered in haunting; these can be anything ranging from Tobacco, Pipe and Cigar smoke even to the brand used.
All types of Perfume, Scent, Aftershave, Soap, Talcum powder and Deodorant can be a good indicator of activity.
Cooking, Baking, Coal fires, Wood smoke and burning smells are often also reported, as are Floral scents of types of specific Flowers.
These are just a few examples and many other things are smelt not always as pleasant but I will not list those here.
Very often these are coupled with strange tastes.
Commonest of activity is the hearing of strange noises and sounds; these can vary in strength, from a whisper to banging on the walls in the more extreme cases.
Footsteps are the most common and can be the most unnerving; I witnessed this not so long ago in a deserted house. Someone entered by the front door and proceeded to come up the stairs when no one else was in, I won’t say I was not a little unnerved by it.
Other sounds include Children playing, Babies crying, shouting, arguments, doors slamming, furniture being moved, things smashing, knocking on doors and music to name a few.
Anything that can be heard, could be, breathing, a heartbeat, footsteps behind you, a car on an empty street, when none can be seen and so on. I would be here all year if I tried to list them all.
Physical activity is rare, in many cases it never occurs but occasionally you find it.
In these cases you may be encountering doors opening and closing or being unlocked by themselves. Objects such as Pictures being moved around, often Televisions and Radios may be turned on and off even though sometimes unplugged. Lights turn on and off at their own accord.
Clocks are a favourite they often are altered or stop at specific times.
Light bulbs are often found to pop out by themselves, lying undamaged on the floor.
Yet again there are many different types of activity that may occur, if yours is not here do not worry, just let us know.
The next grouping is feeling, when someone is living in a haunted property they feel as if they are being watched all the time and they are not alone.
The temperature drastically changes, the rooms will not get warm no matter how much heating is on or what time of year it is, sudden drafts and winds appear from nowhere.
This can also lead to unnaturally hot changes in room temperature.
You may feel as if you are being touched, prodded, scratched and blown on by someone.
Other times you may feel threatened by what is there, again there are no full lists here as it would be to long.
This category is the biggest, sighting a ghost. I make no apologies for its length it has to be comprehensive. Ghosts and Spirits come in all shapes and sizes, here’s just some:-
Most people are familiar with the orbs being picked up on 35mm, Digital and Video Cameras; There may be just one orb or as many as hundreds on a photograph. This seems to be the most common of all the types of sighting with the naked eye. It is probably due to the fact it takes less energy for spirit to move around this way. They come in various colours, shapes, sizes and brightness’s.
Energy strands and wisps like smoke are again common, especially on photographs. These again can be often seen by the naked eye, sometimes floating in the air but often in your peripheral vision.
Next one of my favourites the Predator effect, given to the effect from the film of the same name, this is when something seems to move through thin air.
The moving spirit causes a shimmering, ripple effect, sometimes with amazing visual colours.
Mists and fog like clouds are seen often in haunted sites, some are transparent others like Pea soup. They can come in any shape, size or density.
Blob like energy is just that, they do not have any real shape or substance but do seem to move intelligently. Again they vary in colour, size, shape and density.
Misty human Figures have just an outline or a mass of mist in the shape of a body but with no discernable features, other than Male or Female. This is usually easy to tell by body shape, size and mass.
Body parts i.e. headless torsos, disembodied hands or heads, legless spirits. This can quite often be explained by changes in the structure of a building and the highering of a road surface or lowering of a floor. I saw this occur with half a Jack Russell dog which was most amusing.
Large dark figures most often without features, these often look like a large inky black jelly baby for want of better terminology. Their entire body mass is solid black with no light shining through it.
Full figure apparitions, everyone in the field of the paranormal wants to encounter one of these, believe me.
Solid apparitions are just that, they look like real people until they vanish or do something physically impossible.
These seemingly solid figures are rare in any haunting but not as rare as some people would like you to think.
I have encountered several on my travels and have seen one walk through a wall, across a corridor and vanish into the wall opposite, what an experience.
Poltergeists are extremely rare, the real thing that is. Furniture may move, loud bangs can occur, things maybe seen floating or flying through the air, etc.
I have witnessed real Poltergeist activity and can understand why people are unnerved by it. In the case I think of first, every wall in the building felt and sounded like they were being pounded on, with a giant metal hammer and furniture could be heard being dragged across the floor three houses away.
There are a number of other categories we have to take into account such as:-
Historical Ghosts are spirits of figures from our historical past, many of whom suffered traumatic and violent ends to their lives. They are often seen re-enacting the final moments of their ill fated lives. Some will interact with onlookers being fully aware of there surroundings but not all.
Others from the last group seem to be recorded events, the Stone Wall Theory. This is due to all things being made in part of Silica, the same material used in video tapes to allow recording.
A wall or the very ground therefore may act like a recording device given the right atmospheric and emotional conditions.
We are the video player in effect pressing play when the time is right.
A violent death may therefore be recorded by the very fabric of the building to be held for all time or until it simply fades away.
Anniversary Ghosts come in different types as well but for the most part they seem to replay at a certain time of year coinciding with some event, battle or their death. As with stone wall, the spirit often returns to an important place to them and replays their last actions but at the exact time the event occurred each year.
This seems more often than not just to be a recording but I do know some that interact with people and intentionally it seems draw attention to themselves.
Battles often are seen or heard replaying all over our haunted isle and for those that witness it, it is less than pleasant I can assure you.
Presences are most commonly mistaken for Poltergeists due to the nature of the haunting.
There are it is true similarities between the two but presences are often misguided or trapped souls looking for release. Others are benign spirits checking up on family or friends, going about their everyday business.
They can play allsorts of pranks usually at your expense but do not intend to harm you in any way.
Electrical items will play up and batteries drain very quickly in such cases. Moving objects is great fun it seems, especially the remote for the TV, Your keys are another favourite but try asking for the missing item to be returned, nicely, it will usually reappear in plain sight.
Many types of activity can occur when a presence haunts a property but the spirit seems to be trying to attract attention to itself more often than not.
Crisis Ghosts will turn up to warn someone of impending danger, as the name suggests at the time of a crisis.
They come to alert people of problems about to occur and seem to be trying to overt it.
The other form of crisis ghost is when the spirit of a loved one who has that moment passed on appears to their family. This can happen where ever they are in the world and to more than one person at once.
Many crisis ghosts and presences will interact with the people who are aware of them.
This spirit will often communicate their thoughts, feelings and sometimes actually speak to you.
Interactive spirits are some of the most difficult to try to track down.
They know why you are there and often know you’re coming before the investigator does. Unless they wish to make contact they will not show themselves no matter how many times you visit.
They mostly are there to protect the family or property and are more than likely family checking up on things. Some want to prove survival, others to help with problems their death has left behind and yet more just to say their fine.
We have found in some cases interactive spirits do want to communicate and when this occurs the haunting changes to suit all concerned.
Entities are given various terms like demons or evil spirits, many are of a negative nature but I would not label them that way.
The devil after all is a product of religion and so too are demons. These energies not being of the light use fear to gain energy to manifest themselves often in unpleasant ways.
They are of a lower vibration from the other spirits and feed off negative emotions, instilling fear, pain, sadness and anger in most cases.
These emotions create energy with which the entity can cause more activity, a never ending vicious circle till someone comes to put a stop to it.
Incubi and Succubi are romantic and sexual entities of an unpleasant nature. I will say little about these here anyone needing further information on the subject should email us in confidence.
Animal spirits are often seen in many haunted properties; they are sometimes just heard or felt.
On occasion they are seen and we have encountered many dogs, cats and even rabbits in spirit form in haunted buildings.and on one occassion as i sat in the bedroom of an house tuning into the spirits there in walked the spirit of a bengal tiger that had past many years beforeas you can imagine i was a little unnerved by this but still delt with it in the same maner and professionallism as i would any other spirit wanting our help
Elementals and Devas are spirits of the land sometimes also called fairies; these seem to be on the increase again with the belief in them returning.
As with all things there good and bad amongst them some are there to help others to down right annoy.
